Euro 2024

This is a lightweight blog built to share parts of my 2024 Europe trip

The blog was built using Flask (a Python web framework), HTML, and CSS

The blog uses Google Cloud, specifically, Firestore for DB entries, GCS for image buckets, and App Engine for hosting

A Telegram bot and webhook were created to forward any messages to the backend and use them as blog posts

Combined, this allows me to send a simple text message to post to this blog

I mainly built this so that my mother knows I'm still alive, but I also thought it would be a cool way to learn more about Gcloud

Enough nerd stuff, here is the trip itinerary:

Blog

FC København game today. Starts in ~20 minutes

Post image

Today we flew to Copenhagen and spent a lot of time exploring the city. We are currently eating dinner in the meat packing district and tomorrow we will go to the FC Copenhagen soccer game

Post image

Our last day in prague it was rainy so we relaxed more and enjoyed the local cuisine. We spent a lot of time in a local beer hall and got dinner at a restaurant that Anthony Bourdain ate at on his only visit to Prague

The start of the Charles Bridge. A walking only bridge that takes you from Praha 1 across the river

Post image

After the castle we walked to this famous beer garden and enjoyed views of the city. The beer garden is on the other side of the river from the “main” city so you can see everything

Post image

This is the Prague castle. We walked here our second day and explored the area

Post image

First day in Prague after the plane landed we did a river cruise. Great to see both sides of the bank from the water and doing it at sunset was a plus

Post image

On our way to Prague now. Flew from Porto to Luxembourg and are now boarding our second flight on a smaller plane to Prague. No pics from yesterday because we just went back to the beach to enjoy some sun as we will not see the beach again on this trip

Post image

Enjoying the beach today. It looks overcast but actually very nice

Post image

Explored downtown Porto yesterday and did some Port Wine tastings. Some were good and some not so much - not sure I am a huge fan

Post image

Made it to Porto to meet up with some friends

Post image

Writing this from Porto, Portugal: Yesterday was my last day in Amsterdam, I took it easy in the morning and then went to Flevopark for the NoArt music festival. I saw some good dj’s and left a bit early to get a few hours of sleep because my flight was at 5:10 AM

Post image

After the museum I explored Vondelpark for an hour or so

Post image

The sun came out today - I visited the Rijksmuseum

Post image

I had time to kill between getting here and hotel check-in so I went to the Heineken experience while I waited

Post image

Woke up at the crack of dawn to fly to Amsterdam. Easy and painless flight with KLM. I arrived to a cloudy, rainy, dutch day but the weather has since cleared up a bit

Post image

Schönbrunn Palace yesterday in Vienna. The summer home of the Hapsburgs, and I can see why. Similar to the Palace of Versailles in layout: large palace in front with extensive gardens/forest behind. I spent probably 3 hours walking around the gardens

Post image

I wanted to explore some of the natural wine vineyards on the outskirts of the city but the forecast called for on and off rain and it is hard to get there without a car so I am doing the next best thing: visiting the best natural wine bars in the city

Post image

The guinea fowl for dinner

Post image

Food menu for reference. So far, Austria and Hungary have had very good food (rivaling that of western europe) at very good prices

Post image

Dinner tonight at Skopik & Lohn in Vienna. It is Michelin recommended (Recommended NOT Star, Mom. I am being financially responsible) restaurant. Pictured is the trout sashimi. I have never had trout sashimi or seen trout this pink

Post image

I did not think to take the photo until I had already started eating but this was lunch today. Veal schnitzel, side potato salad (very customary), and of course beer

Post image

This is the Hofburg Palace which used to be the winter home of the Hapsburgs. It now contains various museums and the Austrian president lives there. I went to the Austrian History Museum

Post image

This is the museum I came to see. The mumok

Post image

Entrance to the MuseumsQuartier. A lot of the popular museums are in a courtyard through this entrance

Post image

Woke up early this morning and got a workout in at the hotel. Will do my first round of real sight seeing today as I was a little preoccupied in Budapest to really do that

The location for dinner tonight…looking for veal schnitzel and beer

Post image

made it to Vienna and checked into the hotel… Going to dinner later but first time to explore a little

Post image

At the Keleti train station to head to Vienna

Post image

Race over and back to Budapest. The track shuttle will take you to a train line to go home but it is very busy…so what do you do? Walk 2.5 miles through the countryside to a soviet era train that is less crowded

Post image

Cars are lining up… T-10 minutes

Post image

Back for race day

Post image

Good qualifying - in the taxi now back to the city for a concert in Buda Castle

View of the finish line from the seats. Qualifying is in 2 hours but there is a feeder series race in the meantime

Post image

Late start to the day - at the Central Market Hall to grab some early lunch. Taking the train to the Hungaroring next to catch F1 Qualifying

Post image

The Crowdstrike fiasco almost derailed the trip but luck was on our side. After a 4 hour delay at the London Luton airport I am finally boarding my flight to Budapest

Post image

Landed in London - on the bus now to switch airports and then on to Budapest

Post image

I won the seat lottery - both seats next to me are empty

Post image

PHX -> LHR

This is the start of the blog and my final test message!
